Mbarara Mayor Backs Caning

By Kyomuhendo Muhanga
Kampala

(extract)

MBARARA municipality mayor Wilson Tumwine has lashed out at Members of Parliament over the laws that seek the abolition of caning in school.

"Any MP who could have suggested that caning of children in schools be abolished could either be an aged person whose children have grown up or one without a child.

"Caning is very instrumental as far as child upbringing is concerned. It imparts sense into a child's brain," Tumwine said.

He was recently addressing teachers and pupils of Ruti Moslem Primary School where he had gone to commission a sh82m staff house.

This is a project under the School Facility Grant and local government development projects.

He was accompanied by his deputy Hajat Nuruat Musoke, township officer David Bashakara, District Education Officer Charles Turyahikayo and all the municipal councillors.

"Once a child tries to misbehave, apply the cane. We don't want nonsense in children. We want those with upright morals to build our country. Beat sense into them," Tumwine ordered.
