Don't spare rod, says Education Director

The greatest role that teachers had to play in the upbringing of their students was not their ability to impart knowledge but to mould their character. To achieve that end, teachers should lead exemplary lives and be beacon-lights to their students, said Mr T.D. Jayasuriya, the Director of Education, at a meeting held at the Magammana Government Sinhalese Mixed School to bid good-bye to its head teacher, Mr M. Jinoris, on his retirement after 32 years' service as a teacher.
Continuing, Mr Jayasuriya said that teachers had a great responsibility towards the nation in producing men and women of high integrity, good character and fortitude to steer the destinies of Sri Lanka. If teachers failed in their responsibilities, a whole nation could be wrecked to pieces.
"Students are so misbehaved mainly due to the abolition of corporal punishment. Without the cane it is impossible to control students of the present day. I advise teachers to use the cane whenever it is essential," added Mr Jayasuriya.
"Sinhalese teachers now are enjoying a high position that even an ordinary vernacular teacher could be promoted as an Inspector of Schools", said Mr M.T. Katugampala, head teacher of the Government Boys' School, Homagama.
