Singapore Assizes.A Malay named Ahmad bin Jafar and an Indian named Kassim Khan were charged together with the theft of four rolls of silk, valued at $52, from a shop in North Bridge Road. They claimed to be tried. Kassim Khan was found not guilty, and was discharged, but Ahmad bin Jafar was convicted. He had a long record of previous convictions, and has spent most of his time in prison since 1896. His lordship said that he was a bad character, and committed him to rigorous imprisonment for three years, further ordering that he receive 12 strokes with a ratan. [...] |
