A MAN named Yeok was found guilty by Mr. O'Brien yesterday of dishonestly receiving stolen property at 5 a.m. on the 18th instant at Pulo Dammar, the property consisting of a pair of gold bracelets, a pair of gold earrings and one silver ring. A boy named Jayah, ten years of age, was found guilty of being concerned with the theft of these articles.
The elder prisoner was sentenced to two months' rigorous imprisonment; and the boy, who is a slightly made and sickly looking child, was sentenced to receive ten strokes of a light rattan. The chastisement was awarded him in the court yard of the Central Police Office, and although he yelled lustily, he seemed little the worse when it was all over. The cane at all events was slight enough, and the blows light enough, to satisfy the most ultra humanitarian friends of the natives.
