Teenagers' 'too heavy' sentenced reduced
Two teenagers, Verell Stevens and Lionel Stevens, who appealed against sentence of 18 months and twelve strokes of the tamarind switch imposed by the Resident Magistrate of St. Elizabeth, got their sentences reduced by the Appeal Court Thursday.
They were ordered to receive six strokes each of the tamarind switch as soon as possible. The 18-month sentence was quashed in each case. They pleaded guilty on December 27 last year to the larceny of p6 oranges along with the limb.
In delivering the judgment, the Hon. Justice MacGregor stated the Court felt that the penalty was too heavy. It was their first offence.
Other members of the Court were the Chief Justice and Hon. Mr. Justice Carberry.
