Youth Gets 6 Strokes of Birch

Press cutting

CHRISTOPHER Byrne (18), Carrow Road, Drimnagh, Dublin, was sentenced to 12 months' hard labour and six strokes of the birch at Manx Assizes in Douglas yesterday for his part in an attack on Robert Russell, Manse Road, Kilsyth, Stirlingshire, on July 14.

Last month 20-year-old George Pratt, Portland Place, Liverpool, who was charged jointly with Byrne, admitted attacking and robbing Russell of £30, and was sentenced to a year's hard labour and given 10 strokes of the birch.

Byrne denied the charge yesterday, but a jury took only 10 minutes to find him "guilty."

Bank Notes

Byrne was asked why he had said to Detective Sergeant Clague, when shown pictures of the injured man in hospital, "I did not think we had done that to him."

Byrne replied, "Pratt was a mate of mine and you get used to saying 'we'. What I meant was I didn't think Pratt had done it."

Asked how he came into possession of Scottish bank notes, Byrne said he had previously loaned Pratt £14 and Pratt had repayed [sic] him with the notes. The money was not given to him as his share of the robbery.
