Six Strokes of the Birch
Parents to Pay Damages
A fourteen years old boy was ordered six strokes of the birch by the Douglas Juvenile Magistrates on Saturday.
With three other boys, two aged fourteen and one aged fifteen, he was involved in twelve charges of theft and wilful damage.Mr. Gerald Bridson, chairman of the Magistrates, said this boy, who had been convicted previously, had been playing fast and loose and conduct like this would not be tolerated. He ordered the parents to pay £19 9s 9½d damages.
The boy was also bound over for twelve months, and the three remaining boys were bound over for a similar period.
The boys had caused considerable damage to penny-in-the-slot locks on Douglas Head, at the Flattery Pier, and in the Central Hotel, to an electric meter at a house in Tynwald Street, had stolen small sums of money, and had stolen a football and other articles from a tent in Port-e-Chee Meadow.The boy who was birched had also stolen a bicycle and "received" stolen money.
