Trio Robbed Elderly Man After Attack With Iron Bar
The sobs of a heart-broken mother shook the silence of city police court to-day when Jesse Gibbons, Edward Thompson and Leonard Williams received severe penalties over the charges of robbery with violence and of assault and battery. Gibbons and Williams each were sentenced to serve three years at Kingston penitentiary and to suffer 10 strokes of the strap -- 5 at the expiration of 3 months of their term and the balance at 6 months.
Thompson's sentence was 18 months definite at the Ontario Reformatory and 12 months indeterminate -- together with ten strokes of the strap at times and number similar to those to be received by Gibbons and Williams.
It was at the pronouncement of the use of the strap that the stricken tones of the mother's wail rang out over the courtroom. It was while officers and relations assisted the woman from the scene that The Star learned the details of the arrest of the three young men.
