Sent to Reformatory for Serious Offence
Two Youths Get Two Years, Third One Year -- All Get Strap
Found guilty of an attempted serious offence against a 14-year-old girl, Timothy O'Leary, Henry O'Brien and Ernest Stapley were sentenced to the Ontario Reformatory by Justice Raney to-day.
O'Leary, who had never been in trouble before so far as the police records showed, was sentenced to one year definite and one year indefinite, and 12 strokes of the strap. O'Brien and Stapley, both colored, who had records of several petty crimes each, were sentenced to two years less one day, and will receive each 15 strokes of the strap.
In sentencing the prisoners, the judge commented upon their youth, their ages ranging from 17 to 19 years.
"If you were older, I would send you to penitentiary for this very serious crime of which you are guilty. I am taking your youth into account and am sending you to an institution where you will be compelled to work and will be subjected to the strictest discipline."
All three received the sentence without emotion as did the families of the prisoners.
