The public flagellator had a busy day at Pentridge on Friday,
two youths named respectively James Cook and Albert Johnson
receiving a birching of twelve strokes each, while a third
convict named Joseph Stevens received a whipping of twelve
strokes with the cat-o'-nine-tails. The three men were sentenced
by Judge Eagleston at the Melbourne General Sessions on September
1 for robbery in company, Cook and Johnson to two years each,
with one birching each of twelve strokes, while Stevens was
sentenced to seven years imprisonment, and one whipping of twelve
strokes with the cat-o' nine-tails.
