Teenager gets 12 strokes for gross indecency
Zuba (FCT), Jan. 9, 2013 (NAN) -- A Zuba Grade 1 Area Court on Wednesday sentenced 14-year old Emmanuel Ekpenyong to 12 strokes of the cane for gross indecency.
Ekpenyong was charged before the court for sexually debasing a toddler.
The Police Prosecutor, Mr Haruna Danlami, told the court that Ekpenyong of Glo, MTN mast Tunga Maje-Abuja, had been having canal knowledge of the two and half-year old (name withheld), of the same address.
He said that the act of the accused had caused her injuries which her parents had to pay N17,000 to treat.
The Presiding Officer of the court, Mr Alhassan Kusherki, sentenced Ekpenyong to 12 strokes of the cane after the accused pleaded guilty to the one-count charge of gross indecency.
Kusherki said the reason for the light sentence was the absence of a remand home in the FCT and that he was too young for the prisons.
He added that the number of strokes was minimal because he was a first time offender and had shown remorse for his act.
He also ordered that N17,000 compensation be paid to the family of the victim for the cost of the treatment.
Kusherki directed that a letter of apology from the parents of the accused be sent to the family of the abused toddler to serve as deterrent to others. (NAN)

Court Orders Flogging Of Pick-pocket
An Ibadan Chief Magistrates' Court has ordered the flogging of a serial pick-pocket, Taiwo Ajiwe, after being caught in the act of stealing N200.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Olalekan Obayanju told the court that Ajiwe, 35, stole the sum from one Abigael Okekunle on Saturday at Academy area of Ibadan.
He said the defendant confessed to frequently stealing money from unsuspecting passers-by and commuters.
Obayanju said that the action of Ajiwe contravened Section 390(9)(4) of the Criminal Code Cap 38 Vol. II Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
The defendant pleaded guilty to the one-count charge of pick-pocketing when his plea was taken.
Some counsel present in court, however, pleaded with the judge to be lenient with the defendant in order not to worsen his poor condition.
Chief Magistrate Adams Adeshina ordered Ajiwe to be given six strokes of the cane publicly. (NAN)
