Extract from documentary film about Malaysia
This 2-minute video extract comes from a 2009 British TV documentary series by Channel 4, Unreported World. Reporter Aidan Hartley finds his way to one of the squalid reception camps in Malaysia where illegal immigrants are held while being processed. One immigrant says he has received one stroke of the rotan, and lowers his shorts to show the resulting weal across his bottom (see still picture above). Hartley describes this, rather over-sensationally, as being "scarred for life". The caning had taken place six months previously. In reality, I know of no evidence that the weal from one stroke would last forever.
