c.1900?: ATWOOD & BRIGHAM'S CHOP AND OYSTER CAFE.

Here we are evidently in a school classroom. The over-the-desk punishment looks like a caning, but since it is in the USA it would probably at the time have been called a switching. The teacher does not really look as if he is giving it his all.

The relevance of the picture to the establishment being advertised is wholly unclear. Matters are made even more mysterious by the word 'Whip-poor-will' (which is in fact a species of bird) below the drawing.

Probably from the beginning of the 20th century -- the availability of sandwiches is mentioned, and according to some sources these began to be popular in America around 1900.
